Another Year in High School
by Thelma Ughanze

We all know the stress of high school. The daily popularity contest of everyone to try to be cool, the long boring hours in classes, and the pressure to make good grades so you can graduate as soon as possible. It is tough being a high school teen. No doubt. But luckily there are some simple things you can do this time around to make the school year more bearable and actually a little fun.

Goals: Set realistic goals for yourself. I am not saying aim low,but try to aspire for grades that are attainable to you. Not everyone can be that straight A student that every teacher loves, and all the kids cheat off of. You are unique with your own learning style. So make this year challenging by aspiring to do better than last year, but don't push yourself harder than you have to.

Wardrobe: It seems like being on top of the latest fashion trend is the aim of every high school teenager. To be popular you must have Hollister stitched on you the front of your shirt. Don't buy into the hype. You just need to have your own style and be comfortable with it. Be confident in your own clothes. Just be sure they are cleaned and ironed, and looking neat. Hold your head up high in those halls this year knowing that you look good.

Participate: Try to join a couple of extra-curricular activities this year. There are tons of clubs and teams that have your name on it. Find some type of school group you are interested in and become and active member in them. This will give you something to look forward to during school. You will be able to make more friends, and be able to express yourself outside the class walls. Plus being part of a club makes your college applications look good.

Be prepared: Be sure you have all the supplies you need for school. You don't want to stick out as the kid that never has a pencil and is always on the sidelines because you don't have the right gym shoes. That is unnecessary negative attention that can easily be avoided. Get your parents to take you shopping or just ask for a gift card so you can do the shopping yourself. And try to make it a habit to get all your things ready the night before so you don't forget anything important like your homework or lunch money. You should want to give off the impression that you are organized and have things under control. Being a scattered-brain will only add more stress to the school year and put a negative spot on your image.

Be Yourself: The bottom line to this whole article is to just be yourself. Honestly that is all you need to do. That is the only way you will be able to survive another year in high school. There will be students who like you for who you are an won't mind being your friend. There is nothing worse than pretending to be something your not so don't even attempt it.
