Are You an Unhappy Mom?
Are You an Unhappy Mom?
Paula Fellingham
Judy is the mother of 14 month old Nathan. He’s a sweet baby and her relationship with her husband is good. They live modestly but have all they need. Judy knows she should be very happy....she should be satisfied with her life....but she just isn’t. The problem is - Judy feels like she has no life. Prior to motherhood she was a successful businesswoman. Although she chose to stay home and be a full-time mom, her days are long and boring. Judy feels anxious much of the time - restless - and sometimes even resentful of “giving up her life” as it seems to her.
What’s a solution for this problem?
Judy’s problem is a common one among young mothers. When women have a career they are validated - complimented and encouraged - by co-workers and employers. Fourteen month old babies don’t do that for us.
Young mothers, used to being active and appreciated, sometimes wonder if the “trade-off” is worth it. I always assure them that motherhood is unquestionably and absolutely worth it.
One solution for Judy is to do something - everyday - that she looks forward to. For some it may be working out while the baby naps. Exercising usually makes us feel better all day long. Or she could scrapbook in the evening for an hour or two while Dad tends Nathan - or after he goes to sleep. Then on Saturdays Judy can get a babysitter for a longer time, maybe 2 or 3 hours, so she can do something she really enjoys. Then when Judy’s cup is filled she can better give love to Nathan from her overflow. She’ll be able to draw energy from her happiness and be a better, more patient mother.
