Conscious Procrastination ~ Pt. 3

Good day, this is Revvell from BodaciousLiving.com, here, on the WIN!

One thing I’ve heard and, done myself is think that if I keep my calendar full, I’m more likely to get things done because I can’t tell myself ~ “you’ve got plenty of time; you can do it later.” Sometimes this works, sometimes not.

For instance, I’m currently volunteering for the Sheriff’s department. If I keep my calendar full with doing what I consider the “fun stuff”, I’m much more likely to get the not-as-fun stuff done earlier so I can be SURE to have it done before going out! I really dislike canceling the fun stuff because I’ve not taken care of biz, don’t you? Say yes, ‘k?

Let me explain fun stuff ~ I love being on the radio and doing my podcasts. Not so fun is  the writing and editing parts. I love being on stage speaking; not so fun is the writing of the speech. Now, I could have someone else do the writing but, then, it wouldn’t be me; it wouldn’t be my experiences, my insights, etc.

Because this past week, I had 5 full days that were not filled with clients or volunteer work, I was more likely to procrastinate on what needed doing.

I called one of the deputies I ride with often and she said she was off for 5 days. Checked my calendar and, other than a few clients and volunteering for a few hours Saturday morning I had LOTS of free time!

Now, you notice, monkey is ignoring the fact that, I’ve got LOTS of business to handle such as my weekly podcast and article; researching 10 countries to find contact information for women’s groups in those countries for International Women’s Day on Mar. 8; rewriting, setting up for and recording my 1st video for a 7 part series as well as writing product descriptions for my shop on BodaciousLiving.com. Do I REALLY have LOTS of free time? If I go out and do other things, will I be feeling guilty because I KNOW I have to get these done?

One way to fill up my calendar of course is to write in these projects and tasks on the calendar and not just on a daily list!

My monkey mind is telling me that I can do all of my podcast on Sunday... write, edit, record, edit some more! My conscious mind is telling me, get it written as soon as possible, then edit the next day when I see it differently. THEN, I’ll have Friday or Saturday to work on rewriting my first vid AND/or, doing more research on the women’s groups... PLUS, writing descriptions for my products on Bodacious Living.

Last week I had my last show mostly written ~ looked at it later and rewrote the whole thing! Now, if I had waited until Sunday (I have to have this in by Sunday evening by the way), then I’d not have gotten it done AND had the time to have my husband do the final editing. I have to be conscious of HIS time as well.

Therefore, I’ve been considering and writing in my pad, where I wanted to go with this for the past few busy days and today, Friday, I’m sitting down and, as soon as I sat and put my mind to it... it’s all coming out easily. I’ve already reread and rewritten parts of it a few times.

Now I’ll continue to write, reread, edit, record and do the first recording edit. IF I like it, then I’ve got two days to sit with my husband whenever he’s got time to do the final editing.

Sunday evening, if I choose, I get to go and listen to he and a friend perform onstage. IF I’d not gotten this started and finished, I’d be working on it Sunday and frustrated that I couldn’t go and having to do the final editing myself which could possibly take HOURS whereas with him, it could take minutes.

Because I finished this before the deadline, I then had time to do some of the other things I need to do before going out on Sunday. OH! As I’m writing this, I’m realizing that saying what I want and need to do encourages me to get stuff done as well! I’m thinking “what if they check my store and I don’t have my product info up yet? Yikes!”

So, what have you been putting off?

Let’s get into some sentence completions which I explained in the second episode on procrastination...

“One thing I’ve been putting off is ....” Again, come up with 6-10 different endings... and then, follow up with....

“One reason I’ve been putting this off is ...” ( do a sentence for each thing you’re putting off ~ you may find different reasons for each.)

Here’s my tip for this show ~

Plan out what you’re going to do to complete a task.

For instance, I ride along with local sheriff’s deputies and when he or she is out of the car, I’ve got a book to read ~ and, not a novel but something I using for research ~ or, a pad to write notes on what I want to do my next show, article or blog on. I could use the pad for writing product descriptions, then type them in when I return home.

The point is, be prepared. Procrastinate on doing other things that are not as beneficial to what you wish to achieve, so when you’re waiting for someone or something, you can get some of the smaller stuff done. Be prepared for it by having what you need near your purse or bag so you remember to take it with you.

    Here’s a sentence stem for this ~

One task I could do while I’m waiting is...

Remember too that, all time doesn’t have to be work time. Most of what I’m telling you here is how to not procrastinate or, rather how to get stuff done by breaking it down into chunks or smaller tasks rather than doing it all at once. Once the little things are done, with just a bit of organizing, you can possibly have it all done sooner rather than later.

Part of where I’m getting this from is one day I was reading and I had my pad near me and some of this just came to me and I began writing it which made it easier for me to get started and add to what I’d written today.

I’m thinking also that, maybe “waiting” time could be used as “down time”. If you’ve been very industrious the day or night before or, before an appointment where you’ll be waiting, then, maybe it’s a time to bring a book or magazine you’ve been procrastinating on reading. Question is, will you be hearing a voice in your head saying “You know you COULD be .... (fill in the blank).... What I’m saying is “You know you COULD be writing that article you’ve been putting off” or.... whatever it is you COULD be doing while you’re waiting.

What I’m getting at here is, YOU’VE got to decide if reading a magazine or novel instead of taking work with you will make you feel guilty or not. A couple of sentence stems for this is ~

One reason I feel guilty is ....

OR ~ One reason I might feel guilty is....

You may not actually feel guilty yet, here’s a chance to uncover possible reasons for why you “might” feel guilty. Get them out and into the air and then you can consciously decide what you want to do.

    Here’s another stem ~

One reason I deserve this time to myself is....

With these, you’ll find out if you REALLY feel you deserve “down time” and the monkey is just messing with you ~ or not!

Enough for today~

Recently a friend and I were coming home from an event and she said something to the effect that “I truly believe the trend is toward.... “ And I’m thinking, so what? What does that mean and how does belief affect our world? First of all, what’s the difference between...

As I was out watering the lawn this morning, I began thinking about how folk tell me they've "tried" something, didn't like it so didn't do it. An example would be when I was teaching yoga and would be asked what type of movement I did, or taught and when I said one thing...
Last evening as I was coming home from class, I was hit with a couple of ideas on what I wanted to do some shows on. Problem usually is in those cases, I'm driving and can't stop and write AND, in this case, forgot my voice recorder. Actually, that's not true... I didn't forget it...
