Getting Ready For the First Day of School.
Getting Ready For the First Day of School.
by Thelma Ughanze
The first day of school is exciting and nerve wrecking for both you and your kid. Things will be a little different. Your kid is a new age, they will be heading into a new grade and you will have to deal with new teachers. Plus more will be required from you and your kid from the school. Although there are alot of new challenges to face this academic session there is no real need to panic. There are certain practical steps you can take as a parent that will usher in the new with ease, and you can start using them on the first day.
For starters you should have all the supplies your kid needs before the first day of school. Have the backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and erasers all bought during the summer that way there will be less helter-skelter the day before. Most schools have a list of supplies that your kid will need for the grade they will be entering. Try your best to buy everything on the list so that your child won't be the one in class constantly borrowing something. (That is a bad look for you and your kid).
Shop for new clothes and shoes throughout the summer holiday so that you won't be rushed into long strenuous hours of shopping the week before. By shopping early you will also save money because stores tend to raise their prices when a new school year is a approaching. So avoid the store rush and high prices and start shopping before everyone else.
Entering a new grade can make any kid anxious. They will have new classmates, new teachers, and new material to learn. Ease your child's nervousness with words of advice. Give them tips on what you do when you are met with a new situation, and tell them stories of how you were when you were in school. It will let them know that they are not alone in their worries and that things are not as bad as they think.
Also try to give them encouragement as often as possible. Let your kid know how special they are and highlight their talents. Set realistic expectations for them. Not every child can be a straight A student and an over-achiever. Know your child personally. Understand their strengths and weakness and set realistic goals for them accordingly. That way they will be properly challenged in school, and find learning exciting.
Finally try to make going to school fun for your youngster. Give them something to look forward to. For instance you can promise to take them out for ice cream when school is out or let them watch their favorite cartoons when they get home. You can also surprise them with a little gift in the morning before they get on the bus just as a way of letting them know how much you love them. Small gestures like these can have a major impact on how your child approaches the new academic term. A little preparation and encouragement on the first day of school goes a long way in reducing the stress the new school year will bring.
