Parenting Today

Parenting was far easier for previous generations. At least it can seem that way. Was there ever really a time when parenting was easy? It is said to be the hardest job on the planet. There is certainly no instruction manual that I have found! It just seems like parenting came more naturally to the parents of yesteryear. The nature of daily life was different and the resources that parents drew on in years past, such as extended family, neighbors and churches often do not play the role in family life that they once did. Families are scattered across the state and sometimes even the country. Most people barely know their neighbors, if at all. And given that our country was based on religious freedom, the role of the church varies greatly from family to family.

Looking back in time it can feel like they had it easy as parents. In retrospect, I’m sure that each generation has seen their own parenting challenges. But, the increased mobility of our society coupled with all the technology can leave a parent feeling isolated and alone in their struggles. It can be embarrassing to ask another parent for advice because we somehow feel that we have failed as a parent if we need help.

While the parenting resources that were once called on have taken different roles, there are new ones that have arrived on the scene that can offer relief and hope to parents.

I always recommend a local or individual parenting resources first. Within most communities you can find support groups, life coaches that specialize in parenting and perhaps even some organizations that hold parenting workshop. These are all fabulous parenting resources. Like anything, you may have to try a few on until you find the right fit for you.

Whether you have a particular issue or just general concerns, utilizing these types of parenting resources adds a personal touch to your experience. One of the things I like to emphasize is that you are often dealing with a two part equation. One is the circumstance or challenge that is actually presenting itself and then how you think, feel and respond to what is happening. In the parenting coaching that I do, we spend a fair amount of time making sure that regardless of what is going on, that the parents are also taking care of themselves in the situation. When we have a problem within the family, all the energy can easily go to the problem sucking up all the air in the room, if you will. In order to breathe, you need fresh air. So, you need to take care of yourself as an individual so that you can be an effective parent.

With our hectic schedules of today, another great place to look is on the internet. This is a place that out technological advancements can really be your ally. You can begin your research for local resources here as well as find books, programs, camps and telephone coaching groups. There is a vast array of parenting resources available online from a wide variety of perspectives. Again, you will know what feels right for you.

Whichever your preference, be it in your community or online, the resources are available to ease the burden of parenting today.
