Spiritual Health: Suicide Prevention...Spiritual Awareness Can Provide an Alternative!

by Aliah MaJon

It’s sad, but unfortunately so very true, that way too many people live their lives without  “Spiritual Awareness” and struggle through heart-breaking difficulties without understanding the value and gift of Spiritual Consciousness. My topic today is “Suicide”, which is a subject that always gets my attention because my only child committed suicide15 years ago. To set a context and let you know how serious this is, the National Institute of Mental Health says this: “Suicide is a major -- preventable -- public health problem. In 2006, it was the eleventh leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for 33,300 deaths. The overall rate was 10.9 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. An estimated 12 to 25 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death.” And the news just reported two new lives ended when two teenage girls committed suicide by stepping in from of a train last month in Norwood, Pennsylvania.

This excerpt from a news report was enough to stop your breathing…

NORWOOD, Pa. — As the high-speed Acela train came thundering down the rails, a teenage girl screamed at her friends to get off the tracks. But Gina Gentile and Vanessa Dorwart did not move. They hugged as the train bore down on them at speeds up to 110 mph, carrying out a suicide pact that the witness herself had backed out of only moments before.

Then the news story continued by saying that one of the teen’s father had died a few years ago, that was Gina, who was about to turn 16 years old, and also that her boyfriend was killed by a car while riding his bike just a few weeks before. Then, the report went on to include information from other such stories, and it also cited another heart-breaking statistic that means something to me personally, since it is about young people, and my son had been only 24-years old in 1994… This is what else was said: “Last year, the city of Palo Alto, CA, was sent reeling by four teen suicides-by-train in less than six months. Two suicidal students from Manasquan High School in New Jersey were fatally hit by trains within two months in 2008. Nationwide, about 4,400 people between the ages of 10 and 24 kill themselves annually, according to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” And, now that I have told you all of this, here is what I want to share about spiritual awareness:

Five Benefits of Spiritual Awareness:

Gives you “insight” into what your journey on Earth is really about…

Assists you to be able to see “gifts” in life no matter what is happening…

Provides the “strength” that you will need to face adversity and challenge…

Activates your “Higher Self” to generate perfect solutions & provide healing…

Connects you to your “Higher Power” so you will always know there is a way out…

Drawing from the list above, let us imagine what an “alternative” might have been for the heart-breaking story of the two teenage girls in Norwood, PA. You see, “Spiritual Awareness” and the development and cultivation of Spiritual Consciousness drastically changes one's outlook on life  -- even in the face of life’s greatest blows. I know because I made it through a life-shattering experience and one of the hardest blows a mother could be asked to endure! The suicide death of my own son was gut wrenching, and I, of course, was stopped in my tracks, as any parent would be under the circumstances. I miss my son Sean terribly, and my heart sometimes swells with memories of him and visions of what life might be like if he were still here. But, I not only recovered and healed, if I can dare say such a thing, my life literally became better than it was before.  I owe that to Spiritual Awareness and the Spiritual Consciousness that continues to grow in me – and allows me to now help others do the same. I wished that I could have helped those precious daughters in Norwood, PA, and I can’t because it is too late. However, I can help you, and every one else who wishes to master their life. Here is how the story of the two teenage girls could have been different, what Spiritual Awareness in action looks like:

An Alternative To Suicide in Spiritual Awareness:

1. Spiritual Awareness let’s you know that the focus should not be your Dad's death –but, how he has blessed your life every moment that he lived as your loving Father.

2. Spiritual Awareness helps you to see the “gift” of everything, even your grief – for grieving is really a celebration of the power and depth of you loving someone.

3. Spiritual Awareness would teach you that tragedies are invitations to triumph – and that when you achieve triumph over tragedy you can then help others to overcome.

4. Spiritual Awareness confirms for you that “mastery” is superior to devastation – for in mastery you become an asset to the world, and not the cause of others’ devastation.

5. Spiritual Awareness clues you in on that fact that your own death will not be real – for your existence is eternal, and seeking to escape only delays the glory of evolution.
