Carolyn Lammersfeld, MS, RD, LDN, CNSD, national director of nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centers of America offers suggestions for improving your nutrition, even when time and energy are low or away from home:
-
When you do have the time and the energy to prepare food, cook large portions and freeze or refrigerate a few servings.
-
Look for nutritious recipes that freeze well like soups, stews or chili.
-
Prepare large quantities of whole grains like brown rice and immediately refrigerate them for use.
-
Look for alternatives to processed foods that are easy and quick to prepare.
-
If necessary, take small steps as you transition toward healthier eating.
-
Replace soda with water or low-fat milk.
To make the switch to better nutrition as easy as possible, Lammersfeld recommends making changes that are appropriate for your current health and previous eating habits. She also said that there are many effective ways that cancer patients can make the transition toward better nutrition. Eating healthy, home-cooked meals is a worthy goal for anyone undergoing cancer treatment or interested in prevention and overall wellness. Nutritional balance can be particularly challenging during cancer treatment, when busy schedules, low energy, side effects or travel away from home make it difficult or impossible to prepare and enjoy fresh, wholesome meals. With the right tips and tools, balanced eating during treatment and beyond is an important and attainable step toward better health and wellness. Also with the help of some resources, a healthy new approach to nutrition is likely to make your meals more delicious and exciting than ever.
