Part 2 of 2: Managers and supervisors must exercise great care and not “cross the line” when coaching employees with performance problems.  This is especially true if substance abuse is suspected.  There are legal implications, risk and liability for companies, and the managers and supervisors who act as agents of the companies; therefore, managers must be able to recognize the “red flag” that signals the need to seek expert help.  While focusing primarily on those issues that relate to the employees’ performance against established standards, the manager or supervisor must also be able to offer appropriate referrals to employees with personal or family issues.  Having a network of HR, Legal and/or other qualified  professionals, as well as the ability to provide information to employees on community resources is also essential.
