Though the literal meaning of Vedas is teachings received while sitting with the master, are a set of writings produced in the first millennium BCE. In India which had been the most important in defining the general perspective on that set of philosophies generally referred to as Hinduism. Transmitted to the west in the nineteenth century, they became a major source of contemporary belief in karma and reincarnation and through theosophy were integrated into the teachings of western occult thought.
