Gloss How-To: The Best Shorts For Your Body
BY: Aly Walansky
Staying confident while showing extra skin is one of the scariest parts of summer.
The summer can be a difficult time for women who struggle with body confidence, and we consulted style therapist Carol Tuttle for her thoughts on looking hot while it’s smoldering out — and feeling great about ourselves the whole time.
- Thin or “scrawny” legs look best in very fitted shorts. You don’t want too much fabric falling around the legs, so skinny shorts that fall between your mid-thigh to just above your knee take your legs from scrawny to beautifully slender. With thinner legs, you can wear pattern or no pattern, just make sure any prints are smaller rather than bold.
- Short legs can appear heavy if your shorts are too baggy or tight. Look for crisp fabrics that hold their shape well, and avoid knee-length shorts that cut you off. Instead choose a mid- to high-thigh length. For prints, avoid anything too big or bold.
- If you have a big butt, the number one rule is to avoid patterns and instead choose dark, solid colored shorts. The best shorts will be those that hit mid-thigh to just above your knee and mid-waist. Avoid pockets, as they can make your derriere appear larger!
- If you have wide hips, choose solid colors for a narrowing effect. Avoid fitted shorts and go for a softer, more relaxed fit and fabric.
- If you have a bit of a tummy, never go for low rise waistlines that will create a look of “flab” falling out of your shorts. A mid- to high-waist pair of shorts will create a firmer abdomen. Pick shorts that fall at your mid-thigh or just above the knee to draw the eye downward away from your trouble spots. Solid colors look great, but don’t be afraid of prints either!
