Creating an organized home business office can seem nearly overwhelming to many. A 2008 NAPO Survey of 400 consumers’ nationwide found that greater than 50% felt disorganized at work. As a trained and experienced professional organizer I have learned that by the time my business focused clients call me for organizing help, they have been frustrated for quite some time.  Being disorganized eats up your time. Loss of valuable time equals lost money.

In the other corner...living organized means being able to find WHAT you need WHEN you need it.

___________________________________________________________________________

To begin your home business office organizing, I suggest you use the ACT organizing formula Laura and I designed and use often on The Organized Woman Show. It goes like this...Assess your home business office area and decide what IS working and what IS NOT working for you. Then, Create a plan so you know what you would like your home business office zones and spaces to look like and how you would like them to function. Finally, Tackle your home office organization project by following these steps:

A.  Divide your office into 3 areas:

  1. Area #1 is the immediate work area and should contain essential materials.
  2. Area #2 should contain the items that get only occasional use.
  3. Area #3 should store infrequently used items.

B. Set up activity zones in your home business office. A few suggestions to get you started might be:

  • An office  supply zone includes your office supplies, etc.
  • A paper processing zone includes some horizontal space for processing.
  • A work zone includes your desk, computer & phone.

C. Round up necessary containers. Use what you already have around your home as much as possible. If you need to purchase containers, measure BEFORE you shop.

D. Keep your home business office organized by labeling:

  1. your containers and
  2. the drawers / shelves where they reside.

E. Decide to clean up after yourself daily. This is much more difficult in a home based business office, but can and should become part of your working routine.

I've pulled together additional tips and ideas to help you through the process. I share further information on office productivity, desk organization and paper management on my (Vicki's) website blog found at www.OrganizingMindOverMatter.com

Make sure that what you are storing in this valuable space has some real value and works within your business plan. Your organized home business office needs to make sense to you. You CAN do this!

In the podcast, home office organizing, which I recorded today, Laura and I talked you through the important parts of home office organizing. I promised you, our listeners, more detail here than we were able to supply in our audio show. Here are some additional helps for success as you begin your home office organizing project:

First: Divide the office space into 3 areas to ensure that it is productive.

  • Home office area #1 - This is the immediate work area. It contains essential items arranged for easy retrieval. A calendar, telephone, pens, notepads, computer & printer are common home office items that are best kept no more than a few feet away from the desk chair.
  • Home office area #2 - Items that get only occasional use could be placed several steps away from the main work area. If space allows, put these items on shelves and in filing cabinets around the exterior areas of the room.
  • Home office area #3 -The 3rd area is for nonessential items. This area stores items used less often such as additional office supplies or old tax records.

Second: An efficiently organized home office should be zoned into ACTIVITY areas. Position your office equipment by frequency of use.  The key is that logic plays into the home office organizing plan.  Most offices include the following:

  • Work zone A - Commonly your desk, computer, printer and phone. It can also include a work table.
  • Supplies zone B - Typically shelving or drawers that store office supplies & paper supplies.
  • Reference zone C - often consists of a bookcase, a file cabinet & shelving.

Third: Establish a paper processing area. Include  an action file and a reference file.

Home office organizing is essential to feeling peace and order in your home. Don't give up if you have not yet succeeded! Visit my blog (Vicki's) to see before and after photos of home office spaces I have organized and to get step by step help links for organizing and managing your:

  1. desk
  2. most important papers
  3. file cabinet papers, and
  4. daily to-so list

Please leave a comment and share with us your favorite home office organizing tip!

Having an organized clothes closet can make such a difference for you. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and frustrated that you can't seem to find what you want to wear, you will have a clear view of all your options! When you can actually see what you have available, you will find it much easier to pull together an outfit or find just the right accessory.

There are many great products on the market today that can help you organize, contain, display and protect your clothing, shoes and accessories. Taking some time to Access the current situation, Create a plan for how you would like your closet to be and Tackling the job will pay off in multiple ways. Using our S.P.A.R.K. process, you will be able to Sort, Purge, Assign a Home, Contain and Keep it Up! You will also recognize when it is time to purge items you no longer use.

We've pulled together some of our favorite tips and ideas to help you through the process. Be sure to allow enough time to complete the project--usually about twice as much time as you might think!

You can also visit Laura's website and blog at www.harmonywithin.com for further information and ideas! And--be sure to share a few of your own!

The kitchen is the most used room in a home. Kitchens are called the heart of the home for a reason. We love to gather there to:

  • Enjoy our family’s conversation
  • Eat
  • Entertain

A messy pantry is a recipe for distress. Clearing out and cleaning up a pantry requires some serious purging, but it also means adding a few things — namely, organizing tools and food storage accessories. Try these tips from Vicki Winterton, a professional organizer and online co-host of the WIN's 'The Organized Woman Show'.

____________________________________________________________________________________

As a professional home organizer, I understand that Organizing your kitchen pantry is a necessary job that intimidates many women. Do you find organizing your kitchen pantry overwhelming? Do you hardly know where to begin the process? To simplify the job for you, I suggest you listen to my online show numbered 044 and titled Organizing your Kitchen Pantry then use use the SPARK formula designed by my online show co-host, Laura and myself. That formula includes these basic steps:

  1. Remove all the items from your pantry storage shelves and place them on your kitchen counters and kitchen table.  Group likes items together.
  2. Clean & disinfect all the pantry shelves.
  3. Sort your items into Categories. Remember to keep the categories general rather than specific = Pasta rather than spaghetti.
  4. Purge the food items that have expired or that your family does not like.
  5. Assign a Home by zoning your pantry shelves based on frequency of use and the space needed for the categories assigned in step # 3.
  6. Round up Containers. Use first the containers you already have around your home. IF you need to buy more containers, clear is nice because it allows you to see in. (To view AFTER photos of pantries I have organized and favorite pantry organizing containers, see the link below.)
  7. Keep it up by doing three things:
  • label your containers and/or the shelf spaces
  • inform your family of the effort you put into organizing the space AND
  • ask for their help in maintaining the space. (The old, "If you take it out, put it back in the assigned space" is what you want them to understand.)

There you have it. A clean, categorized and organized pantry where daily upkeep takes only moments. This is a great job for you to do with your teenage children. When they are part of the process, they really "buy in" to the keep it up idea!  Organizing your kitchen pantry is a one day project that brings lasting benefits. YOU CAN DO THIS!To listen to The Organized Woman Show podcast dealing with this very topic, click here and look for show number 044. Preparing a home for sale can be a lot of work. Learning what investment in time, energy and possibly money will pay off can help you decide where to focus and how to begin.

In any economy, a person selling their home wants to be able to complete a sell as quickly as possible and get a high return on their investment. Preparing your home to go on the market can be an overwhelming proposition for many people. Statistics show that a well-staged home will sell 30-50% faster than its counterparts AND that potential buyers make their decisions to purchase your home or not within the first 30 seconds upon entering it. That makes the first impression the key to selling your home fast and for top dollar.

Remember that potential buyers will be visiting your home using all five of their senses:

  • Sight: Open the blinds and let in the natural light. Declutter, clear countertops, and consider keeping your pet outside of your home for the day.
  • Smell: Something on the stove or baking in the oven smells like home. Or fresh flowers or a burning candle can offer the ambiance you're looking for.
  • Taste: This will come typically from good or bad fragrances in your home. These sense are connected--always!
  • Hearing: Turn off the TV and computers and other sound-makers. Some quiet, easy-listening music in the background instead will set the stage for a sell!
  • Touch: Offer a soft, comfortable couch or chair and make sure the room temperature is comfortable

There is a "sixth" sense to consider, also. That is the sense of "space." Removing items in any space will make it appear and feel larger. Allow your guests to enter a small room first and wait outside the door so it doesn't feel crowded. Leave space in your closets, leaves out of the table--whatever gives the sense of more room!

You will learn from this show Ten Tips that can help you prepare for this life-changing event! For more information on home staging and organization, be sure to visit Laura's blog at www.harmonywithin.com.

As trained professional organizers and experienced mothers, Laura and I have come to realize the benefit of organizing your Kid's Bedroom so your child can easily maintain the space. In show number 042 we use our SPARK formula to talk you step by step through the process...start to finish.

Laura is the mother of 5 children and I am the mother of 3. We are firm believers that your job as a mother is to help your children understand you love them always...AND you are NOT their slave. We believe good home organization systems make bedroom maintenance easily do-able for your child.

To view photos of some favorite child's bedroom storage products with buying links included, visit Vicki's business website by clicking here. Vicki also included tips on what to do about your child's toy box.

If you are reading this, hopefully it's because you are preparing for a wonderful trip. It may be a short jaunt to a nearby get-away or a 2-week dream vacation. Whatever it is, there are some things you can do to get organized for the trip; things that can often be done ahead of time so you are not overwhelmed and stressed as your departure time approaches!

Listen to our show and also visit Laura's website for more great ideas on How to Get Organized for a Trip! And,of course, Happy Trails!

For most of my life (this is Vicki writing) I felt I should be keeping a diary AND a family history in regard to the life happenings of my children, my husband and myself. However, I was a busy woman and thought it was just too hard to begin and keep up these histories I should be writing. YOU know the thought, "Another thing I should be doing, but didn't have the time to do". I always felt a little guilty about my lack of personal and family history writing. Then I learned a lesson from my oldest daughter, Nikki. She taught me to lower my expectations and simplify the process. For the past 8 years I have been keeping a weekly record of the happenings in my own life that are noteworthy. (This takes me 30 minutes a week. Very DO-ABLE!) For the past 5 years, I have been keeping a 1 page family history including a memorable photo for the year. (This takes me up to 2 hours each January. Again very DO-ABLE!) I no longer feel any guilt and I often enjoy the process of working through these histories on a regular basis.

Many unanticipated joys and benefits come from keeping a personal or family history. The benefits come not only from completing the records, but also from the process of writing them. For me, journal writing and history keeping have taught me to watch for the little miracles and wonders that happen often. I have become more careful in my everyday observations.

If you have not done so yet, click on our show page and listen to show number 040. While you listen, visit Vicki's business blog by clicking here to download the promised templates for my:

At The Organized Woman Show we don't just tell you to do something, we talk you through the process. YOU can do this!

As I write this, I am realizing there are only a few short days until, in our area, school is out for the summer! Now that my two youngest children are 12 and 17, I no longer feel the extreme panic that I did when there were seven at home ranging in age from 2 to 18. Please don't misunderstand! I love my children and they are the most important part of my life. However, realistically, the logistics of creating a summer that did not completely overwhelm me and kept the kids happy and productive, were not always simple!

Vicki and I have gathered together some of our favorite ideas and suggestions that will help you be pro-active about having a wonderful summer with your kids--it just takes a little planning and creativity, and alot of love!

The WIN Show with Vicki Winterton and Laura Lawrence

Christmas traditons

One of our favorite traditions is decorating gingerbread houses.  Every year the day after Thanksgiving 11 of my grandchildren and their mothers, get together at my house and decorate gingerbread houses that are cut from masonite and used year after year.  We have had alot of fun and have had some really unique houses.

Christmas traditions

Years ago I made a large nativity set out of ceramics.  It has become a tradition for us to put it up on Christmas eve every year.  The Nativity is large enough to fill my 10 long foot mantle.  We read the nativity out of the Book of Luke and as each event happens, we add that character to the mantle.  The last thing is to light the snow covered lights that surround the mantle.  Then it's hot chocolate or cider and to bed.

Baby Clothes

I just watched you on the live WIN show.  I loved your tips.  I am a fairly organized person, but I would love to hear a show for all of us young moms dealing with the rotation of baby stuff and baby clothes.  I have 4 children under the age of 5: 3 boys and 1 girl.  Every season I spend DAYS pulling out hand me down clothes for the new season and new sizes for the reapidly growing babies.  Every time I do, I think that I have it finally organized so that it will be super easy the next time.  But the next time it still seems to take DAYS with clothes sorted and scattered everywhere.  I would especially love suggestions for this problem with limited space and funds.  Thanks so much.

We will also be adding shows specifically on kids and students soon!  Thanks for your interest.  Please be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed, so you'll be updated as new shows are added!

New organizing shows when?

I have listened to all six of your shows. I am interested in learning more. When will new shows be recorded and available to me? How can I be notified of new shows when they are made available?

New Shows

New shows are being uploaded weekly! So glad you are enjoying them. You can subscribe by RSS and through itunes, also!

Subscribe on iTunes

I subscribe on iTunes - that way it just automatically downloads a new show when it's available.

New Organizing Shows When

Thank you for listening! So glad you enjoyed the shows. We hope to have new shows being added weekly by the first part of September. There will also be an RSS Feed for your subscription, which will notify you of all updates.

Best regards, always, and Happy Organizing!
