Welcome to "Ask Auntie Artichoke" online audio and video shows. The honorary title of “Auntie” is given in many cultures to the wise women who guide and mentor others in life. “Aunties and Uncles” are sources of encouragement, support and unconditional love.

Why The Artichoke?

The symbol of the artichoke has great meaning in my teaching and writing. As I work with families, I frequently find only the outer edges are exposed and can be prickly, hard to open and sometimes bitter. They are closed to new ideas or methods. Many families prefer the known over the unknown, even when the old patterns and skills are not serving them well.

But, as you expose the artichoke and people to warmth, caring, and time, gradually the leaves begin to open and expose the real treasure—the heart.

My training is as a parent educator, family coach, and personal historian. I have written more than 20 books, hundreds of articles and am blessed to have had opportunities to speak internationally on family issues, including care giving. I am a life-long learner and connector. My favorite volunteer activity is writing end-of-life stories for Hospice.

Anna Stevens, JD, BBA is the owner of EQ for Success, an Atlanta-based company that provides consulting, training and coaching in Emotional Intelligence. She is a certified administrator of the newest tool in Emotional Intelligence assessment industry - EQ-i 2.0.

Anna is a current MBA candidate at Georgia State University and a community leader and volunteer at Woman's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence. In addition, she is a happy woman and loving mother.

Wondering what inspired Anna to start EQ for Success?
Here is her amazing story:

"I started expressing interest in mind power and self-development when I was only 12 years old. Since then, I have learned how to set and achieve high goals and became the one who always makes things happen.

Born in Russia, I graduated from a law school and a business school there in 2008 before I moved to the US. In addition, I received training in Win-Win Negotiation from Emory and Creative Problem Solving training from Creative Education Foundation and Creative Problem Solving Institute. My background is teaching, sales, and management. Here, in the United States, I also worked for the Federal Government in the Legal Field.

I came to The US, after graduating from two schools, to live my happily-ever-after with an American at-the-time-husband whom I had known for 2 years. Unfortunately, the marriage did not work out as Mister Right became a possessive, violent, demanding abuser, and after 8 months of isolation and suffering I faced the to-be-or-not-to-be life threatening situation. I made my decision and chose life, so the police took me to a shelter for victims of Domestic Violence. I was lost. I was sick. I spoke no English and had no family or friends. I was by myself in a new, unfamiliar world where I had to survive.

While in the shelter, I always kept a list of short-term goals and a separate list of long-term goals as well as a list of things to do. Every morning I'd review my lists and act upon my goals. Every day I looked at a blue, high, beautiful sky telling myself that I will survive and succeed. I had no money, but I would go to a park and look at families with children, joining their happiness in my mind. I would go for a run or a walk, feeding my mind with positive statements like "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better". I had to restore my mental and physical health and find new meaning in my life as before I used to live for my husband. I had to go through a several courts, fight for a divorce, find my first job in America, learn the language and the culture, and adjust.

In 1.5 years I taught myself English, passed an academic English test and prepared myself for an MBA program. I empowered myself to get a new life, new friendships, new job, new way of thinking, new habits, and new me. I met a great caring man who is now my loving husband. I discovered my great passion and founded my own company. I am healthy, happy, and live life full of meaning and joy! I survived with Emotional Intelligence, and I do not believe in failure - only success!"

I have been a contracted freelance sign language interpreter since 1996. Working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people has been a wonderful blessing for me. I was so into my career, however, that I didn’t recognize that I was out of balance. In 2001 I was diagnosed with a fast spreading deadly form of cancer. This experience helped me to realize that there is much more to healing than just healing the body. To me, getting cancer was a blessing because it started me on a journey of learning about the human body and psyche.

I recently published my first book called Embrace the BITCH Within. BITCH is an acronym for Being In Total Connection with Herself. It is my journey of finding myself with a life threatening illness to healing, discovery and awakening.

I am currently workking on two more books that are in the process of being published. They are; The Way of the Modern Mystic and Runda 3: Healing Through the Three Levels of Consciousness.
