Fear of Success..Who Me?

Episode Number:
029
With:
Anne-Louise Sterry, aka Aunt Lena

Here we go again...trying to figure out what holds us back from whatever it is we love doing. My fear of success often brings me up short, and I have a hard time understanding why. Recently I was reading the book by Ellen Peterson, “Choose Joy, Create Abundance”, and I found several paragraphs about the fear of success. It hit me right between the eyes, as Ellen says, fear of success is often about fear of radical change in ones life. Of course, I thought to myself, anxiety about my life changing as I become more successful is part of the background chatter in my mind.  A sneaky voice keeps telling me that if I really give my whole self to the work I want to do I’ll end up leaving my family, become a drug addict, and lose all my friends!

Wow that is an amazing leap isn’t it? Does that ever happen to you? So here is what I am learning to do: 3 hot tips for the day.

Change that story: My new story or expectation is this: my ‘success’ will bring good to my family. (And by the way, success is whatever you say it is for you. I am not only talking about business success.)

Think in little steps: I am not going to be leaping from where I am now to the status of an ‘Oprah’ in a week! One can just keep moving little by little and as we do we adjust, learn, grow, till by the time we are an ‘Orpah’, we will be ready for the change.

Name that voice: Mine is called Ursula, the octopus from Little Mermaid!) And then make friends with it, let it see the light of day. If we do that, we can ‘help’ the voice change its story. If you try to bury it, for sure it comes back to haunt you. I know this from experience!

Let me know how it works. I love to hear your stories!

We make old family recipes for the holidays, we sing while we cook and we tell stories. These are all part of Christmas with our family. From the oldest to the youngest, we look forward to all the laugher, silliness and the cooking. Oh the cooking...we HAVE to make the Ravioli, the Zeppoli, the...

On Christmas Night, my family along with my 83 year old mother watched the movie Elf.  I have probably seen it twice before. It is such a funny movie and yes some say predictable and sappy, but I still tear up when the crowd starts singing for Santa. Watching this time I simply thought YES...
