Old Joe and The Carpenter

Episode Number:
005
With:
Anne-Louise Sterry

The folk tale, Old Joe and the Carpenter, is from the U.S.A.  It is one of my favorites and children seem to love it too. You know, the message it has for me seems changes every time I tell it. Or maybe each time I simply hear it in a different way.
That is what I love about folk tales AND why I love sharing them as a storyteller. Because I get so much from them myself!  Sometimes the comments children share with me after hearing stories are so perceptive - in fact they are teaching me!
Once after hearing this story, a 6 year old said " But why would anyone want to be mean to a friend like that?" I had no answer...why DO we choose to me 'mean' to each other?
What do you think? Please write and tell me...what you think and what your children think!
By the way, I found this version in a story collection by Margaret Read MacDonald called Peace Tales. It is a wonderful collection and you can get it at your library!

We make old family recipes for the holidays, we sing while we cook and we tell stories. These are all part of Christmas with our family. From the oldest to the youngest, we look forward to all the laugher, silliness and the cooking. Oh the cooking...we HAVE to make the Ravioli, the Zeppoli, the...

On Christmas Night, my family along with my 83 year old mother watched the movie Elf.  I have probably seen it twice before. It is such a funny movie and yes some say predictable and sappy, but I still tear up when the crowd starts singing for Santa. Watching this time I simply thought YES...
